What is a good French horn to buy for a music composition major?
My son has been playing a rented Conn 8D, a King Eroica. He likes the horn very much, but it is expensive. I am wondering if any horn players like any other horns like a Yamaha. Any recommendations?
I played on the King Eroica for 20 years. It was a good horn and a good investment. I purchased it for $900 and then sold it for $1200 20 years later. I switched because I wanted to move to the Geyer style wrap and purchased a used Yamaha 667 for $2500. After playing on it for 5 years I bought another horn for $10,000.
From my experience you can see the price of horns varies a lot, but since price is an issue you can find a good used horn for ~$1200. Since its seems to already be working for him I would try and find a used Conn 8D or King Eroica.
