What does 172hp at max horsepower 5500rpm mean? And 184ft-lbs at max torque 3000rpm mean?
Is it the optimal shifting range for everyday driving. the redline is at 6300rpm.
I'll try to be more clear than the others. An engine's power
(and torque) output changes with RPM. Your engine may
produce 110hp at 2000 RPM but its max is 172 at 5500.
Thats just an example. The figure was made up just to
illustrate the relationship. The same thing happens with
torque. However, peak torque and hp usually happen at
different engine speeds. Manifold pressure also plays a
part in hp. Lets say that you are holding speed and you
suddenly floor it. Even though your engine speed hasn't had
time to increase yet, it still produces more power than it did
an instant ago. Torque and hp ratings given are for the
purpose of comparison shopping and are likely to show a
vehicle in the best possible light. While the #'s may be
accurate, there is no standard for manufacturers to adhere to.
For best gas mileage, shift slightly higher than 3000. For
best acceleration, shift slightly higher than 5500. Once you
increase above those figures, you should notice a decrease
in engine output (because the engine is past its peak).
By shifting slightly higher, you take advantage of the engine's
best performance. To make your engine last the longest, use
the lowest possible manifold pressure for any given RPM.
The difference can be compared to running a mile with a 50lb
backpack on to running without a backpack. You would last
longer with the lighter load. So would your engine.
